- I have had a great deal of trouble with my new USR Sportster 33.6 modem
- for my Mac. The problem is basically that it won't maintain a reliable
- connection for very long -- 30 minutes if I'm lucky and then it drops
- the connection. How do I know it's my modem? Well, I borrowed a USR
- Sportster 28.8 modem from a friend and connected it to my Mac exactly as
- my modem was connected. The 28.8 modem worked just fine. I tested it
- for a week or more, leaving myself connected for 2 days at a time. I
- concluded that there was probably nothing wrong with my computer's
- connection to the modem, nor with my phone line. My Sportster 33.6
- modem is not entirely broken. It seems to work normally -- for a while.
- If all I ever wanted to do was to connect to AOL for a couple of
- minutes a day to read email, I probably wouldn't have noticed anything
- wrong. But I wouldn't have bought a high speed modem for that
- application.
-
- I tried calling USR and was told the average wait on hold was 20-30
- minutes -- that was on a long distance toll line during the day. I'm
- sorry, but I just don't think that's reasonable. I hung up. I tried
- connecting to their web site to see what advice I might find there.
- There was nothing there addressing my problem.
-
- What I would really like is for USR to replace the new chip set in my
- modem with copies of the old chips that are in the 28.8 modem that
- worked so well for me. DSP Rev 1.0.5 11-29-94, Supervisor Rev. 6.0.4
- 11-30-94. I don't care about 33.6. It only works with another USR
- modem anyway and my employer doesn't have any for me to connect to. I
- just want a modem that works reliably at the standard 28.8.
